What your HMRC auto-enrolment letter actually means

Start with the facts, then work through your next steps. Check your own account rather than assuming every reminder means the same thing.

01

Check your enrolment and records

A sign-up confirmation means HMRC has enrolled you. Sign in to HMRC online services, select MTD for Income Tax and confirm your income sources.

Confirm your details
02

Check for an overdue first update

The first deadline was 7 August 2026. For standard periods, it covered 6 April to 5 July. Check your HMRC account for outstanding updates.

03

Quarterly penalty relief is temporary

No late quarterly update points apply for 2026/27. Late tax return points still apply; quarterly points apply for subsequent tax years.

04

Catch up before your annual return

HMRC says you must send your final quarterly update for the year before submitting your tax return. The letter itself does not confirm your filing status.
