Avona

Construction & trades

MTD software for electricians.

Finish the callout. Leave the receipt pile behind.

Consumer units, EV chargers and emergency repairs keep you moving between wholesalers and customers. Capture the paperwork while the job is fresh, then let Avona AI help organise your electrical business records.

Digital records, bank feeds, statement imports, transaction categorisation and quarterly self-employment updates. Pro adds customer invoicing, VAT accounting and reporting.
Monthly price
From £15/month for Lite. Pro is £20/month.

Making Tax Digital

It’s what comes in.
Before costs go out.

Your customer pays for cable and equipment as well as your labour. Those material charges can take turnover above an MTD threshold even when your take-home profit is much lower.

When does MTD apply?

Combined qualifying self-employment and property income, before expenses:

Over £50,000 in 2024/25
From 6 April 2026
Over £30,000 in 2025/26
From 6 April 2027
Over £20,000 in 2026/27
From 6 April 2028

Eligibility and exemptions matter. These are income thresholds, not tax-free allowances.

From the trade counter to your records

What happens to an electrical job’s paperwork?

Bring the evidence into Avona, review the suggested categories and check the figures before submitting. Here is what that means for three familiar situations.

Illustrative records for a sole trader who is not VAT-registered. These are worked examples, not customer data or product screenshots.
What you bringHow you use AvonaWhat you check
£360 customer payment
£120 of cable and fittings
Connect your bank or import the transactions, and upload the merchant receipt. Review income and materials as separate records.Keep £360 as the sale and £120 as the materials cost. The £240 left over is not your turnover.
£90 trade-counter receipt
£75 for the job; £15 for home
Use receipt capture to bring in the purchase evidence. Review the suggested category against the individual items.Only the £75 business portion belongs among the job’s costs. Check that importing the bank payment and receipt has not counted the spend twice.
£800 contractor payment
£1,000 labour; £200 CIS withheld
Bring the bank transaction into your records and use the contractor’s statement during your review. Keep the statement for your tax return. The gross income is £1,000. The £200 is tax already withheld, not an expense. This example assumes a 20% deduction on a labour-only payment.

This CIS example explains the records you need. HMRC currently lists Avona’s CIS tax-return support as in development; it is not a demonstration of an available CIS submission feature. Read HMRC’s CIS guidance ↗

The costs behind your work

Six expenses worth
keeping records for.

Examples for electricians. Claim only eligible business costs; mixed use, equipment and your accounting method can change the treatment.

  • Cable and consumer units

  • Testing kit calibration

  • NICEIC or NAPIT renewals

  • Insulated hand tools

  • Business van costs

  • Trade waste disposal

One thing to watch

CIS deductions are not a business expense

Keep contractor deduction statements alongside invoices. Report gross earnings before CIS, and track the deduction separately as tax paid rather than reducing your turnover.

Fit the admin around the work

A routine for the end of the job.

  1. After buying the materials

Capture the wholesaler receipt or upload the invoice. Keep the date, supplier and amount legible, and identify any items bought for your own home.

    How document capture works →
  2. When the payment arrives

Review the bank transaction alongside the invoice. Check deposits, balances and refunds; for contractor work, reconcile the net payment with the CIS statement.

  3. Before your quarterly update

Review Avona AI’s suggested categories, check for missing cash income or duplicate entries, and confirm the business share of costs before submitting. Keep your annual tax return in view too.

Before you get started

Questions from sole-trader electricians.

Can Avona submit my CIS deductions in the annual tax return?

HMRC’s Avona listing currently marks Construction Industry Scheme support for the tax return as in development. Quarterly self-employment updates are listed as ready now. Keep your deduction statements and confirm the available annual-return support with Avona before relying on it to report CIS deductions.

Does MTD apply to every electrician?

No. This page is for electricians working as sole traders. Your start date depends on your combined qualifying self-employment and property income and any exemptions. The thresholds above are based on income before expenses. A limited company has different reporting obligations.

Can I keep my electrical business spreadsheet?

Avona supports spreadsheet uploads alongside receipt capture and bank connections. Bring your existing records into the review process and check the imported dates, income and expense categories before submitting. See the document capture guide for supported formats.

Does a bank feed show my full income under CIS?

Not necessarily. A contractor may pay you after withholding CIS tax. Use the payment and deduction statement to check your gross income and keep the deduction separate. Do not record the net bank payment as the whole sale or treat the withheld tax as a materials expense.

Will Avona AI decide what I can claim?

Avona AI suggests categories for your review. You still need to check the receipt, remove personal spending and confirm that the cost is eligible. A merchant name alone cannot establish whether a purchase was for your business.

Do quarterly updates replace my annual tax return?

No. Quarterly updates report income and expenses during the year. You still need to complete the annual tax return and account for any other relevant income, adjustments and tax already deducted.
